Nine days before Christmas, the Salvation Army is launching a desperate appeal for volunteers. The agency reports its seasonal goal is off by nearly 50 per cent, simply because of a lack of people to staff its Christmas kettles.

London’s Salvation Army is urgently seeking volunteers for the charity’s annual Christmastime fundraiser as it heads into its final week. With the agency’s Christmas Kettle campaign – which has been running for about 140 years – set to wrap up on Dec. 24, the need for more volunteers “is very urgent” if the effort is going to meet its $650,000 fundraising goal, said London’s Salvation Army executive director, Nancy Kerr.
